Great Tips for Maintaining Area Rugs

By John · August 18, 2010 · Filed in Uncategorized · No Comments »

I just read an article that gave tips on cleaning area rugs. It described techniques used by a professional cleaning company. The owner of the business said that everything you need to clean your rug is in your home. All you need are soap and water. The same things you would wash your hands with. It appears that most wool rugs have a natural stain repellant called lanolin in their fibers. These oils get stripped when you use heavy detergents and strong cleaners. So even though your rug looks clean, they will get dirty even faster the next time because those repellents have been stripped. After cleaning your rugs you should hang them to dry outside. The ultraviolet light actually rejuvenates the lanolin. He does say to consult a professional when it comes to pet stains and moths. And believe it or not, a cheap vacuum is better than a fancy two stage. Apparently the expensive vacs will actually damage the fibers of your rugs. They usually have beater brushes and heavy suction that are too intense for your rug fibers. It was also recommended to use a broom to loosen up the dust and then go over the rug with the cheap vacuum to extract what you’ve loosened.

I’m so glad I came across this article. It was a very informative. It’s great to know that even though you may have spent big bucks on your area rugs, it doesn’t take big bucks to maintain them. If these techniques are good enough for the pros then I guess they’re good enough for me.
